The DfE Education Record app is a new national service that allows Year 11 pupils to access and share a secure digital record of their education.
It is designed to support pupils as they move on to sixth form, college, apprenticeships or training.
What information does it include?
An education record may contain:
- Name, date of birth and address
- Schools attended
- Official exam results (such as GCSEs, added automatically after results are released)
- Information about support needs (where applicable)
Schools are not creating new information – the app shows data already held securely by the Department for Education.
How will it be used in school?
During the summer term, Year 11 pupils will be offered the opportunity to activate their education record in school. A member of staff who knows the pupil will verify their identity, and pupils will briefly be allowed to use their phone under supervision for this one‑off process.
Do pupils need a phone?
No.
- The app is optional.
- Pupils without access to a suitable device are not disadvantaged in any way.
- Normal school support remains in place for all pupils.
Does this replace GCSE results day?
No.
Pupils will still collect their results in person at school on results day. GCSE grades will appear in the app later that day once officially released.

Do parents need to give consent?
Parental consent is not required. We are sharing this information with families to be open and transparent about how the app works.
What should pupils do now?
Where possible, pupils are encouraged to download the DfE Education Record app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store onto their own phone (not a parent/carer device). Further guidance and support will be provided in school.
If you have any questions, please contact the school.
